Ready Mix Explained

Right Mix, Right Strength, Right Time

What it is

Ready mix concrete is batched at our local plant to your exact specification, loaded into a truck-mounted mixer, and delivered to your site for direct discharge or pump placement. All mixes batched to BS 8500 with delivery ticket supplied.

Who it's for

Groundworkers, builders, main contractors, landscapers and self-builders who need volume concrete delivered to spec and on time. From foundation pours to commercial slabs, ready-mix is the default for any pour over 4m³.

When it's needed

Foundations and footings. Floor slabs. Driveways and external slabs. Walls and structural elements. Any pour where the strength must be specified, the volume is predictable, and the delivery needs to hit a programme slot.

Why a professional matters

Ready-mix is only as good as the timing, the mix design and the placing. Wrong slump and the concrete is unworkable. Wrong strength and the cube test fails. Late arrival and the previous load has set. Our local supply, our local drivers and our 30 years of South Wales pours make sure none of that happens.

The Cost Of Getting It Wrong

What Wrong Ready-Mix Costs You

Concrete is unforgiving. Here's where ready-mix orders go wrong.

What Goes Wrong

  • !

    Failed cube tests, rejected pours

Wrong mix design, wrong batching, or wrong placing all lead to failed cube tests. Pour rejected, formwork comes out, programme slides, the whole job restarts.

  • !

    Cold joints from late deliveries

Each truck has 90 minutes from batching to discharge. Late between trucks = cold joint = structural weakness. Local supply keeps trucks within the window.

  • !

    Stiff concrete and rejected loads

Wrong slump on arrival means a load that won't work. Either you reject it (charged), accept it and force-place it (failed), or wait for additive (delayed). Right slump from the start avoids all three.

Common Mistakes

  • ×

    Ordering by volume only

Strength, slump, additives, aggregate size all need specifying. We ask the right questions on the call.

  • ×

Booking too late for the slot you need

Same-day slots exist but they go fast. 48 hours ahead guarantees the slot you want.

  • ×

    Not factoring in placing method

Pumped concrete needs different slump from direct discharge. Tell us how you're placing and we set the right mix.

Technical Detail

Mix Designs, Aggregate & Delivery

Ready-mix concrete looks like one product. It isn't. Here's what we supply and how to choose.

Mix strengths and applications

C20 for blinding and unreinforced fill. C25 for general domestic foundations and floor slabs. C30 for reinforced foundations, house slabs and most groundworks. C35 for structural concrete, piles and commercial slabs. C40 for high-load industrial floors, swimming pools, and structural elements. Every mix to BS 8500 with delivery ticket.

Aggregate size and slump

20mm aggregate standard for most pours. 10mm for thin sections, narrow formwork or heavily-reinforced elements. Slump 50mm for stiff direct-discharge, 100mm for normal placing, 150mm+ for pumped placement. Tell us how you're placing and we set the right slump on the wagon.

Additives and specialist mixes

Plasticisers for workability. Air-entrainment for freeze-thaw resistance (external slabs). Sulphate-resisting cement for aggressive ground conditions. Rapid-set additives for early loading. Fibre reinforcement (steel or polypropylene) for slabs without mesh. Every additive specified per BS 8500.

Delivery, discharge and pumping

Truck-mounted mixers from 4m³ to 8m³ per load. Direct discharge to formwork via chute (up to 3m reach). Boom and line pumps available for awkward access. Volumetric (mix-on-site) available for variable quantities and small loads. We'll quote whichever route works best for your job.

Residential vs commercial supply

Residential: typically 4–10m³ per pour, single-truck delivery, focus on safe driveway access and clean handover. Commercial: 10m³ upwards, multi-truck programmed delivery, integration with site logistics, banksman support if required. We mobilise the right size of crew and the right number of wagons for each.
